Newspaper (handwritten)
In Newspaper, I have traced an entire page of the Toronto Star onto Japanese kozo paper. There are samples of this paper that are over a thousand years old. It is a thin, translucent, but strong and archival paper. Its slightly golden colouring evokes the look of aged newsprint. The painstaking act of tracing the lettering by hand is reminiscent of cloistered monks copying out books in the middle ages. There is something anachronistic in hand lettering current events as if we didn’t have any printing technology. By the time I finished tracing the page the news was no longer current. It is the gesture that remains of interest.
